Najlepiej zachowana romańska świątynia w Polsce. Klasztor powstał w początkach rządów Kazimierza II Sprawiedliwego (ok. 1179). Podobnie jak klasztory w Jędrzejowie, Koprzywnicy i Sulejowie wywodził się bezpośrednio od burgundzkiego opactwa w Morimond. Bezpośrednim fundatorem był biskup krakowski Gedko z rodu Gryfitów.
