W Anglii w XVII - XIX wieku w czwarta niedzielę Wielkiego Postu obchodzono Niedzielę u Matki (Mothering Sunday). Był to dzień wolny od pracy w którym dorosłe pracujące dzieci wracały do domów rodziców i przynosiły podarki dla matek.
W USA 1858 nauczycielka Anna Reeves Jarvis ogłosiła Dni matcznynej pracy (Mothers' Work Days), od roku 1872 Julia Ward Howe promowała Dzień Matek dla Pokoju (Mother's Day for Peace). W roku 1905 Anna Jarvis (córka Anny Reeves Jarvis) wywalczyła ustanowienie Dania Matki (Mother's Day).
W 1914 roku Kongres USA ustanowił ten dzień świętem narodowym . Wypada on zawsze w drugą niedzielę maja.
