Hofmann, który urodził się w roku 1906, prowadził badania nad budową chityny, z czego zrobił doktorat. W 1938 roku szwajcarski chemik odkrył dietyloamid kwasu D-lizergowego, co doprowadziło do syntezy LSD-25 i odkrycia psychotropowych właściwości LSD.
